William in a pose I borrowed from a famous photo of Bertolt Brecht, with an engraving of Friedrich Schiller looking over his shoulder. The yellow-and-blue wallpaper is borrowed from Cezanne - it's in a number of his paintings, including Madame Cezanne in a Red Armchair (1877), which we saw at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in April 2024 - so it was probably on the walls of his house.

Esquisse, paysage d'Arriege (2025)

                 Oil on canvas                16 inches by 20 inches (41 cm by 51 cm) In August 2001, I spent a few days in a farm house in the tiny village of Brie, in the Arriege department in southwestern France. (It's not the Brie - the place where the cheese comes from is far away, in the northeast of the country.) This was the view from the front yard. Since I started painting, I've made a lot of copies of French impressionist landscapes; it wasn't until recently that I remembered that I had a French landscape of my own, tucked away in my photo album from the trip.

The Yellow Dress (2025)

After completing  The White Dress  earlier this year, I wanted to paint a yellow dress and combed the thrift stores until I found this satiny, jeweled formal gown. For the pose, I turned to John Singer Sergeant's Madame X, which was one of the highlights of my visit to the Met in New York in June 2023.  This canvas isn't small but it's only the warm-up for the life-sized version that I'm going paint over the coming months.
